Warming the Body with Salmon

Warming the Body with Salmon

As we move into Shōsō (霜降), the season in the traditional East Asian calendar when frost begins to appear, the air grows crisper and autumn deepens. Around this time of year, it’s especially important to eat foods that warm the body and keep it nourished and hydrated.

I was originally going to share a recipe for jujube soup to help replenish moisture, but since there’s already a wonderful article about it, I recommend trying the “Lily Bulb and Lotus Root Moisturizing Soup” for dryness care.

Today, let’s turn our attention to something that warms from within - “salmon”.

In traditional Eastern medicine, there’s a belief that foods grown locally are best suited to the body’s needs, as they naturally adapt to the region’s climate and environment. For example, tropical regions produce cooling foods like bananas, while colder areas such as Hokkaido and Tohoku are home to salmon, a fish known for its powerful warming properties.

According to yakuzen (traditional medicinal cooking), salmon gently warms the stomach, boosts digestion, and helps replenish both qi (vital energy) and blood. It’s said to relieve fatigue, improve circulation, reduce swelling, and ease stiffness in the shoulders, all common complaints as the weather turns cold.

From a modern nutritional point of view, salmon is a powerhouse food. It helps prevent lifestyle-related diseases, supports strong bones, and promotes recovery from fatigue. It’s rich in high-quality protein, and its DHA and EPA omega-3 fatty acids help keep blood flowing smoothly, lower triglycerides, and reduce the risk of heart disease and arteriosclerosis. Salmon is also an excellent source of vitamin D, which supports calcium absorption for healthy bones and teeth.

And let’s not forget astaxanthin , the antioxidant pigment that gives salmon its beautiful red colour known for its strong anti-aging and cell-protective effects.

As the days grow shorter and the chill sets in, salmon is a perfect seasonal choice to warm your body, nourish your energy, and support overall well-being, a true gift from the northern seas.
