Many people who struggle with sleep share the same experience:

Their body feels exhausted, but their mind simply won’t switch off.

After spending the day working, worrying, meeting deadlines and constantly thinking, the mind can remain tense and alert. Even after getting into bed, thoughts continue racing.

Some people take a long time to fall asleep. Others sleep lightly, wake during the night and struggle to fall back asleep. Some may even sleep through the night but still wake up feeling tired and unrefreshed.

In these situations, the question may not simply be “How can I fall asleep faster?”

A more important question may be:

Why hasn’t my body truly relaxed by the time I go to bed?

This is where Pine Restora (Sho-ko-sen) may be particularly relevant. Its focus is not simply on sleep itself, but on helping the body move away from a state of persistent tension and stress.

A 2017 study published in the Journal of Pharmacological Sciences found that pine nodule extract, as well as a studied constituent referred to as SJ-2, inhibited acetylcholine-induced catecholamine secretion and synthesis.

Importantly, this experiment was conducted using bovine adrenal medullary cells. It therefore represents mechanistic laboratory research and should not be interpreted as direct evidence of a therapeutic effect in humans. However, it provides a potential pharmacological direction for understanding how pine nodule extract may influence physiological stress responses. 

Put simply, the research surrounding Pine Restora goes beyond saying that it simply “helps you relax.”

Researchers have investigated mechanisms associated with the sympathetic nervous system, catecholamines and the body’s response to stress.

4. Particularly Relevant to Stress-Related Sleep Difficulties

So, who may find the research surrounding Pine Restora particularly relevant?

Rather than simply saying “people with insomnia,” it may be more useful to think about people who:

  • experience significant stress during the day and cannot switch their mind off at night;
  • find themselves thinking more as soon as they lie down;
  • feel physically exhausted but remain tense;
  • wake easily because of small noises or disturbances;
  • wake during the night and immediately begin thinking again; or
  • sleep through the night but still wake feeling as though they have not properly rested.

The common theme is simple:

The body may be tired, but the nervous system has not fully relaxed.

5. The Goal Is Not to “Force” Sleep, but to Help Create Better Conditions for Rest

This is an important distinction when discussing Pine Restora.

When people think about products associated with sleep, one of their first questions is often:

“Will it make me sleepy straight away?”

However, the currently available research on Sho-ko-sen does not primarily focus on a direct sedative or hypnotic mechanism. Instead, research has concentrated more on stress responses, autonomic nervous system activity and catecholamine-related mechanisms.
