Pumpkin Seeds to Help Ease Menstrual Pain

When I receive fertility-related consultations, many women tell me that every time their period comes, they experience lower abdominal pain, irritability, and overwhelming fatigue. When they ask, “I take painkillers, but is there anything else I can do to improve this?” I often recommend pumpkin seeds.

Pumpkin seeds, known as Nangua Zi (南瓜子) in China, and Kabocha No Tane (カボチャの種) in Japan, have long been used in traditional medicine to help remove excess fluid from the body and reduce swelling. Their natural sweetness is believed to ease sudden pain, support digestive function, and promote the production of Qi (vital energy). When Qi is sufficient, blood circulation also improves.

In traditional Eastern medicine, menstrual pain is thought to occur when Qi and blood do not flow smoothly, so improving circulation may help reduce pain caused by stagnation.

From a nutritional perspective, pumpkin seeds are particularly rich in magnesium and zinc.

One of the main causes of menstrual pain is strong uterine contractions. Magnesium helps relax muscles, which can reduce excessive uterine contractions.

Zinc supports hormonal balance, helps stabilise mood before menstruation, and may suppress excessive production of prostaglandins, substances that contribute to menstrual pain.

Pumpkin seeds also contain omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which have anti-inflammatory effects, as well as tryptophan, the main precursor of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that helps stabilise mood.

Serotonin production begins when the retina senses strong light and is further stimulated by rhythmic movements such as chewing. Modern lifestyles often involve spending long hours indoors, reduced exposure to natural sunlight, and fewer opportunities for thorough chewing. On top of this, stress rapidly depletes serotonin, making deficiency increasingly common in today’s society.
